Finding a wedding DJ is like a job interview. You are the person conducting the interview. An important question to ask any perspective disc jockey is how much wedding experience they have. DJ’s may have a lot of experience at clubs or other types of events, however wedding DJs require unique skills. You should also ask the disc jockey how much recent wedding experience they have. You should expect experienced wedding disc jockeys to DJ at least 10 weddings annually. To become a seasoned wedding DJ will require at least 25 recent weddings. However, you may find many DJs have experience at hundreds of weddings. Although experience isn’t the number one reason for hiring a DJ, it is important. It will be advantageous for you to have an experienced wedding DJ who can deal with unavoidable last minute changes calmly and professionally.
At this point you have found a few DJs in your area that have been recommended and have experience. But, like with any job interview, you want to make sure the DJ at your reception has appropriate references. References from a friend or family members are helpful. However a quality DJ will be able to provide 5-6 references from recent events, from which 2-3 should be previous weddings. A disc jockey that cannot provide references may not be the best choice for providing entertainment at your big night.
Aside from experience, recommendations, and references your wedding DJ should match your style. A wedding DJ’s personality is one of the most important qualities to look for. Your disc jockey should be someone you are comfortable talking with and they should be comfortable talking with you. Your wedding disc jockey should be professional, adaptable and take the time required to make your wedding unique.
