TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY
Hi! I am Michelle the owner and main photographer of Michelle A Photography. I will start off with a little bit about my business; Michelle A Photography was founded in March 2013 after I graduated from the Fanshawe Photography Program back in the summer of 2012. I describe my style as being fresh, romantic and relaxed, I am very outgoing, fun and “chill” on the wedding day and I am there to make the bride and groom’s day as special as possible while preserving all their amazing memories! Now a little about me, the girl behind the camera, I am engaged to be married to my best friend in May of next year, I have a one year old corgi named Samson who I may be a little too obsessed with and I think I binge watch a little bit to much Netflix for my own good!
HOW DID YOU GET INTO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
As mentioned in the last question, I graduated from the Fanshawe Photography Program back in 2012. I began my photography journey in grade 10 of high school where I was able to take a class solely dedicated to photography and the different aspects! This class was what made me want to pursue photography in post secondary education and once I was in the second year of the program my mind was made up that photography is what I wanted to do with my life! Once I graduated I began asking people to model for me to build a portfolio, after one couple in particular I decided to take the leap into wedding photography! I booked my first wedding for June 2013 and after that day I knew that I loved capturing couples special moments and wanted to dedicate my life to my business and the amazing couples I get to work with!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE WEDDING DAY TO CAPTURE?
Hmm, that’s a hard one! I love so many things about wedding days but if I had to pick only one thing I would have to say bride and groom portraits. I love getting to see the two of them interact with each other and see how much love is there for one another!
WHAT IS THE MOST AWKWARD MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHILE ON THE JOB?
Well, I kind of pride myself on being an awkward person! But one specific moment stands out in my mind that I think back on now and laugh. Back at the beginning of 2015 I headed out with one of my amazing couples to capture their engagement photos. We went to Komoka Park in the middle of March in the snow; there was a pretty big hill and I though hey I can make that. So we started climbing, I did not wear the proper shoes to one, be in the snow and two, be climbing a hill! I fell and all my gear fell out of my bag into the snow! At least the couple were really cool about it and helped me up but still to this day it is probably the most embarrassed I have ever been!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE AND WHY?
There are so many amazing venues in London but I think my favourite is the Idlewyld Inn and Spa. I had the pleasure of shooting my first wedding there this year, the couple had their reception outside in the courtyard with an amazing vintage feel. I just adored all there was to work with for their portraits as well, indoors and out!
NIKON OR CANON?
Nikon!
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM LOCATION TO SHOOT A WEDDING?
My ultimate dream location to shoot a wedding would have to be out west! I always see such stunning wedding photos in the middle of the mountains and at Lake Louise and I would love to be able to shoot out there someday!
AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT IS ONE IDEA OR THING YOU HAVE WANTED TO DO WITH A CLIENT, BUT HAVENT YET?
I would love to be able to photograph an engagement session under a waterfall or by a large body of water like out in Tobermory! I see so much amazing scenery that I would love to capture!
IF YOU COULD SHOOT ANY CELEBRITY WEDDING (PAST, PRESENT OR FUTURE), WHO WOULD BE THE LUCKY COUPLE?
If I could photograph any celebrity couples wedding I think it would choose Chris Pratt and Anna Faris. They are one of my favourite celebrity couples as well as actors and I think that would have been a really funny, chill wedding day!
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED, AND WOULD PASS ALONG TO OTHER NEW WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS JUST GETTING STARTED?
I think the biggest lesson I have learned since starting my business is to learn from failure and don’t let your fear take over. I went full time with my business in April of this year and it was a terrifying experience jumping out of my comfort zone and leaving my safe retail job. It was honestly the best decision I have ever made and if I had listened to my fear I wouldn’t be where I am today!
WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO COUPLES WHO ARE LOOKING TO HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER TO COVER THEIR BIG DAY?
I think the biggest tip I can offer to couples planning their day would be to book a consultation with the photographer you are interested in. This allows you to talk one on one with the photographer, see more of their work and get to know them on a more personal level. You always want to hire a photographer who you like as a person as well as their work!
